6/8 Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen

G Em
I heard there was a secret chord
G Em
that David played and it pleased the Lord,
    C 2x (D) G (D)
But you don't really care for music do you.
G /C D
It goes like this the fourth the fifth, Cale 1
   /Em /C D
the minor fall and the major lift
   /Em(D) D(D7/+?) Em
The baffled king composing hallelujah
     C Em C G-D-G
Halleluja, Halleluja, Halleluja, Halleluja

G Em
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
G Em
You saw her bathing on the roof
    C G
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew her Cale 2
G /C D
She tied you to a kitchen chair
   /Em /C D
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
   /Em(D) D Em
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
     C Em C G-D-G
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

G Em
You say I took the name in vain
G Em
I don't even know the name
    C G
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
G /C D
There's a blaze of light in every word
  /Em /C D
It doesn't matter which you heard
   /Em(D) D Em
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
     C Em C G-D-G
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

G Em
Baby I've beeen here before.
G Em
I know this room I've walked this floor.
  C G
I used to live alone before I knew you.
G C D Cale 3/Cohen 1
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
    Em C D
but love is not a victory march
       Em D Em
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
     C Em C G-D-G
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

G Em
There was a time you let me know
G Em
whats really going on below
    C G
but now you never show it to me do you?
G C D
I remember when I moved in you Cale 4/Cohen 2
        Em C D
and the holy dove was moving too
    Em D Em
and every breath we drew was Hallelujah
     C Em C G-D-G
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

G Em
Now maybe there's a god above
G Em
but all I ever learned from love
   C G
is how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
G C D Cale 5/Cohen 3
And it's no complaint you hear tonight
         Em C D
and it's not some pilgrim who's seen the light
       Em D Em
it's a cold and it's a lonely Hallelujah
     C Em C G-D-G
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

G Em
I did my best it wasn't much.
G Em
I couldn't feel so I learned to touch.
     C G
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you.
G C D
And even though it all went wrong, Cohen 4
     Em C D
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
     Em D Em
with nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
     C Em C G-D-G
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Well, this is how I play it, in G. I'm more familiar with the version that
John Cale did on the I'm Your fan tribute, which was in C, but that's too
much of a pain in the ass for me. Transpose it down a fifth if you wish.

G Em
I heard there was a secret chord

G Em
that David played and it pleased the Lord,

    C G
But you don't really care for music do you.

G C D
It goes like this the fourth the fifth,

Em C D
the minor fall and the major lift

D Em
The baffled king composing hallelujah

     C Em C G-D-G
Halleluja, Halleluja, Halleluja, Halleluja

Easy.

german translation by Jürgen Jaensch

Ich hört' mal von einer geheimen Saite
Die David zupft' und den Herrn erfreute
Doch Musik ist dir schnuppe, was meinst du, na?

In jeglichem Wort
Unwichtig, was du hörtest dort
